2006 Summer Academy Strands

Learning Science and the Science of Learning

The content immersion experience for Summer 2006 will focus on Earth science for teachers of all grade levels (elementary, middle, and high school teachers). Facilitators will strive to model instruction consistent with the recommendations from How People Learn and provide opportunities to explicitly deconstruct key instructional strategies with Teacher Leaders.

Goals:
  1. Deepen content knowledge in earth science
  2. Deepen understanding of how students learn selected earth science ideas
  3. Deepen understanding of select instructional strategies as they apply to learning specific content
Planning for Continuous Improvement

This strand will focus on developing distributed leadership practices to support continued professional learning and growth at the building, district, and regional level. This strand will link the district Science Strategic Plan, NCOSP commitments, and an accountability plan for reporting on progress toward goals identified in those plans. This strand will provide Teacher Leaders with concrete experiences in leadership and facilitation to enable them to contribute as leaders. Importantly, portions of this strand will include participation of district and building administrators.

Goals:
  1. Deepen understanding of ways to strategically use data to inform district decisions and monitor improvements.
  2. Increase cross-grade level district collaboration on science education reform.
  3. Strengthen collaboration among teacher leaders, principals, and district administrators.
  4. Deepen understanding of leadership and enhance facilitation skills.
Effective Science Teaching

This strand will focus on strategies for enacting the recommendations in How People Learn. The sessions will be carefully coordinated with the content strand to provide grade-level and curriculum appropriate experiences for participants to develop the pedagogical strategies modeled in the content immersion.

Goals:
  1. Deepen understanding of strategies for eliciting students preconceptions.
  2. Deepen understanding of strategies for deepening student content knowledge and ways to help them organize, retrieve and apply that knowledge.
  3. Deepen understanding of strategies for providing students opportunities to monitor their own learning.
  4. Deepen understanding of assessment strategies to continual monitor student learning to inform instruction.
Professional Learning Community

This strand will revisit the characteristics of Professional Learning Community described in the first Summer Academy. The strand focus on fostering the growth of the Teacher Leader learning community as well as providing opportunities to consider how Teacher Leaders can develop similar communities within their building or district. The strand will provide opportunities for Teacher Leaders to learn from one another and make connections between what they have learned through three years of partnership professional development experiences.

Goals:
  1. Strengthen collaborations and opportunities for learning between and among teacher leaders.
  2. Deepen connections between learning experiences from all three summer academies.
